On Sunday 29 March nearly 500 participants took to Sydney Harbour to paddle for kids with intellectual disabilities. What a magnificent sight it was, and the final net fundraising outcome will be around $85,000. (Fundraising officially closes on 24 April.) There is only one more week to go before Kayak for Kids takes to the waters of Sydney Harbour on Sunday 29 March. Team entries close on Friday 27 March and single or double craft entries close on the day. Interest in the event has been so high that registration will start at 7:00am on the day instead of the advetised 7:30am. A Maroubra MyTime group has been established by Tresillian Family Care Centres in conjunction with Lifestart Eastern Sydney and Maroubra Bay South Public School, which is where our Lifestart branch is located. MyTime groups provide local support for carers of children with a disability or a chronic medical condition. Lifestart Northern Beaches dad Damian Percy, who operates The Charity Wine Shop, has made a special offer for the month of March. All wine purchased through The Charity WineShop - Lifestart Wine Service page will result in a $40 per case donation being made back to Lifestart. (Normally $20.) Lifestart Cumberland Prospect dad David MacSporran is at it again and is organizing another night of quiet and contemplative reflection (as if….) at the Winston Hills Hotel for interested Lifestart dads. Lifestart is a listed service provider for the Early Intervention Service Provider Panel, for the Helping Children with Autism package funded by the Australian Government through Departments of Families, Housing, learning Community Services and Indigenous Affairs (FaHCSIA). The first course run under this program is the parent program More Than Words. ® An orientation night for the program is being held at Lifestart Eastwood Centre at at 7pm on Tuesday 10 March. Former dual Olympic kayaker and World Champion in surf ski and outrigger canoeing Shelley Oates-Wilding has thrown her support behind Lifestart’s Kayak for Kids. Shelley will paddle the event with her son Kai, who is following in his parents footsteps and at 11 is already a state gold medallist. Shelley, a mother of two, is a highly sought-after sports trainer and motivational speaker. When asked if she was concerned about sharks on the paddle, Shelley replied: “I have paddled Sydney Harbour for 20 years and have never seen a shark. And the safety conditions under which this paddle is being conducted both in time of day and patrol craft make it very safe - and the kayaks we will be using are very hard to fall out of.” (See www.kayakforkids.com.au for full event details.)
